Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe recently shared his company's findings after purchasing and dismantling a Xiaomi SU7 electric sedan, admitting that while the car is impressive, its pricing secret lies outside of engineering tricks.
High Praise for the Engineering
Scaringe's team performed a detailed "teardown" of the vehicle and was left with a strong impression. The CEO called the SU7 a "really well-executed, heavily vertically-integrated technology platform" that is "nicely done." He even stated that if he lived in China, the SU7 would be a car he would personally consider buying.
The Real Secret to the Low Price
Despite the thorough analysis, Rivian "learned nothing from the teardown" regarding how Xiaomi manages to keep the starting price so low (around $30,000 USD).
Scaringe concluded that the incredible affordability is not due to "magic" or secret cost-saving methods in the engineering itself. Instead, the main differentiator is the massive scale and direct government grants that Chinese automakers, like Xiaomi, receive—a playing field that is significantly different from what exists in the United States.
